Come and Celebrate 100 years plus of Women in Sailing
by Sue Phillips
The first race of the 2017/ 2018 Port Phillip Women's Championship Series is being held on Sunday the 17th December at Hobsons Bay Yacht Club. The Club is also celebrating 100 years and more of women sailing at the club.
The first race the Shirley Freeman Trophy will start at 11.00 am followed by the Div 2 "Themed" Cup Non-Spinnaker Race aimed to encourage those Lady Skippers to sail in a race with a less competitive format. The club encourages all ladies to have a go, even if you are new to helming. Boats owners are asked to encourage female members, friends and family to take up the helm for the day and join in the fun of the e Non Spinnaker Race which is being named the 'Suffragette' Cup in keeping with the theme for this season's event. There is a Trophy and prize awarded on the day. This race will be a HBYC Club Course of approximately six to seven nautical miles in length.
Competitors and their friends and family will be greeted back at the clubhouse with a complimentary drink (Pimms Punch / Two Birds beer / soft drink) and there will be a dainty afternoon tea served on the lawn.
All are asked if possible to either purchase a $15- voucher per person. To enter for the race and book tickets for the high tea Click here to register for Race 1 or email email@example.com to book so as to assist with catering but tickets will still be available at the bar on the day
Presentations are planned to commence at 2pm and there is much to be announced (nod nod wink wink) so we hope not too many of the ladies and their crews will have to rush off to Xmas gigs and can join us after the race to share a drink, some dainty nibbles and a tall tale or two as they enjoy our view across the bay to the city.
So Come along and join in the fun and help launch the Port Phillip Women's Championship Series and celebrate how far women have come in sailing!
