With great excitement Yachting Victoria Women and Girls in Sailing Committee are happy to announce the launch of a new initiative called “Local Heroes”. A local hero, in this initiative, is someone who encourages and supports the involvement of women and girls in sailing. So we do not want to exclude the guys!!!  It could be a female that you recognise that stands out from the crowd, who makes a difference and inspires others to get involved in the sport of sailing – a female role model or maybe someone who works tirelessly to encourage girls and women to take up the sport, learn some new skills or get into racing. Your nominated hero can be of any age, hold any position within the club and sail any design of boat.

Heroes can be dinghy sailors, keelboat sailors, Race Officers, club Commodores or flag officers, mums in the tuck shop, women out on the water pulling flags and helping run the races.

Anyone that you recognise that lends a hand and makes the effort every week with an aim to promote and increase participation of women and girls in sailing. Also, as we said, we want to know about the guys too, if they are getting women out onto the water and involved with sailing, mentoring or lending a boat we want to know about them!

All you have to do is: Send a photo to Sam Watson at Yachting Victoria (swatson@yachtingvictoria.com.au) with a short story as to why your Club chose your “Local Hero”.

All photos will then be posted to the Women and Girls in Sailing Web Page and we will feature our heroes in our enewsletter to members as well as the Women and Girls in Sailing enewsletter. The YV Women and Girls in Sailing Committee will announce the best local hero at the Yachting Victoria awards night

We look forward to meeting all your local heroes soon.
